#iCreate Music Outreach up date

Kay Stillion writes,

iCreate has two new music classes. On Tuesdays in Mountainair, we now offer ukulele and voice at 3:00pm, right before guitar at 4:00pm. Ukulele classes are also available at OffCenter Fridays at 3:30pm, right after guitar at 2:30pm. The guitar classes at the Shaffer have grown quite large, so we now have three guitar teachers. Pegeen Mouser is our new teacher.

We had a recital at OffCenter, April 13th for Rick Gutierrez. A first for iCreate, this was Rick's second recital, and he did songs left handed. The guitar he had earned earlier was stolen, so he asked to do the program again but left handed. He also performed a right handed song at the recital  that he had written, It was very moving and well received.

next #Mountainair iCreate recital & meeting

Update from Kay Stillion, who writes,

Our next Mountainair recital is all violin students, Estrella Griego, Samantha Torrez and Jaiden Martinez, who will perform Saturday January 21, 2:30 pm at Pack's Cafe at the Shaffer.  Interested in our community based music outreach program and trying out violin or guitar lessons yourself? Call 847-2301 for more information. iCreate welcomes guests at meetings and activities. If you have a guitar or violin not being used, we can always use more musical instruments too as well as volunteer instructors.

The next iCreate returns to the 4th Saturday schedule interrupted by holidays and will be January 28, 2:30 pm at Lenora Romero's. We hope to be announcing exciting news about iCreate funding and development very soon. Look for our finding a new home and expanding music outreach, youth programs, community garden/sustainability mission, and developing new educational and creative projects.

iCreate's Music Outreach program will hold its first #Mountainair recital Saturday October 29, 4 pm at Packs Cafe in the Shaffer Hotel. Performing in public is the final program completion requirement. Performances by students completing certificates include a solo by Wyatt Greene and a trio of five songs by students from the adult class. Depending on yesterday afternoon's lesson, additional students may join the recital playbill.

iCreate thanks Alita Garcia at Pete's Carpet Thrift Story on Broadway for donating lesson space and would like to recommend supporting this new business (or rebirth of an old one made over ~ Pete's Carpets + Thrift Store) to our iCreate friends and supports. Suggested Donation $7 at the door

Come join in the fun with many wonderful performers! This special concert raises funds for OFFCenter and the unique iCreate Guitar program held free every week at OFFCenter.

iCreate is a non-profit organization fostering creativity and the arts in underserved communities. Their volunteer instructors present the guitar workshop on Fridays at OFFCenter where people can attend 12 free sessions, learn 5 songs by heart, perform a recital and earn their very own guitar!

Please help support the continuation of this unique program held at OFFCenter!

Alas, the long awaited and much anticipated list of performers did not come in a ready to use format. Silly me expecting a flyer, a program or even plain text I could copy and paste. I'm hoping for the best from OCR because I won't type out the program after having specifically asked for ready to use copy.

A Video Example of Music Outreach

Everyone knows what a garden is, but what is music outreach? That particular iCreate project seems less clearly understood and thus perhaps less valued by some than the community garden.

Show not tell: perhaps this video example will address this gap. World on Fire, a documentary made for a film class. is about an amazing music school, called the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program (SMMO), for students from inner cities schools.

Music Therapy

From the rhythmic beat of our hearts to the stories
and life of our heritage, music is a part of all of us.

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is the clinical use of music by a trained professional to meet cognitive, physical, social, emotional, behavioral, spiritual and communication needs of people of all ages and abilities. As a recognized healthcare profession, music therapy is currently improving the quality of life of thousands of people in the United States and across the world.

Who can enefit from music therapy?

Music therapy benefits people of all ages and abilities. Music therapists work in schools, hospitals, prisons, daycares, nursing homes, retirement communities and hospices, just to name a few. The Joy of Music provides services especially in the following areas:

Autism
Behavior disorders
Developmental delay
Hospice
Palliative care
Rehabilitation
Alzheimers
Parkinson's Disease

Why music?

Music is a rich environment. During musical activities, whether it includes listening to music, playing an instrument or moving to music, your brain experiences activity in both hemispheres, making it a unique avenue for progress.

Music is motivating, interactive and adaptable. Specific qualities can produce positive results in people when used therapeutically. Music is motivating, interactive and versatile. It is a part of every culture in every nation of the world. Music is used in celebration and sorrow; to help us learn and recall memories from times gone by.

No, of course iCreate's music outreach, program, which falls more into the category of social service, is not the same as music therapy. The kinship, however, is clear ~ as is the psychological benefit of music and its role as more than cultural accoutrement.
